T5z Quick Reference Guide

Introduction

Congratulations on your new Taylor T5z. The T5z is a versatile hollow body hybrid guitar, blending acoustic resonance with electric power. This manual will help you understand the guitar’s features, electronics, care, and maintenance to get the best out of your instrument.

Pickups and Electronics

Pickup Configuration

The T5z features a unique three-pickup system:

  • Body Sensor – Magnetic acoustic sensor inside the body.
  • Neck Pickup – A hidden humbucker beneath the fretboard.
  • Bridge Pickup – Standard humbucker near the bridge.

This design allows seamless switching from acoustic-like tones to full electric sounds.

5-Way Selector Switch

The 5-way switch unlocks five distinct tonal options:

Position 1Neck Humbucker + Body Sensor (Series)
Most acoustic-like tone. Warm and open, ideal for unplugged-style playing.

Position 2Neck Humbucker Only
Smooth and round tones. Great for solos. Roll back Treble for a darker sound.

Position 3Bridge Humbucker Only
Versatile electric tones ranging from bright and spanky to heavy crunch. Use Volume to push your amp.

Position 4Neck + Bridge (Parallel)
Hollow body-style sound with a subtle mid-scoop.

Position 5Neck + Bridge (Series)
Full, bright, and powerful — great for lead tones.

Control Knobs

  • Volume – Master output level.
  • Bass – Boost/cut low frequencies.
  • Treble – Boost/cut high frequencies.

Strings

  • Most T5z guitars ship with electric D’Addario XS (.011–.049).  12 string models can use either 9-42 or 10-46 sets.
  • Light-gauge electric strings can be used, but may require a setup or adjustments by a qualified tech.
  • Acoustic strings are not recommended but may also be used. Using a wound G string requires a replacement saddle cut for acoustic string intonation (available through taylorguitars.com). Note: the string-to-string output balance is much better with electric strings.

Connections

  • Use any standard ¼” guitar cable for everyday use.
  • A TRS cable may be used to connect to balanced gear (PA, recorder, or amp).
  • Stereo cables will not split the signal. To send acoustic and electric tones to separate amps, use an A/B/Y box (e.g., Morley, Whirlwind).

Electronics & Power

  • The preamp is powered by a 9V battery (approx. 40 hours of plugged-in use).
  • Always unplug your guitar when not in use to preserve battery life.
  • The LED indicator light confirms the battery is good. If it fails to light, replace the battery.
  • Use a marker to date batteries when installed for tracking life span.

Common Questions

Can I adjust the pickups?
No. The pickups are carefully voiced and non-adjustable.

Are they noisy?
The humbuckers are hum-cancelling, but like all electrics, may pick up induced noise depending on venue/equipment.

Is this the same as the Taylor ES system?
No. While inspired by ES, the T5 electronics are custom-built for hybrid tones.

Can I swap the pickups?
No. T5 pickups are proprietary and not interchangeable.

Care & Maintenance

Cleaning Your Guitar

  • Gloss Finish: Use Taylor Guitar Polish or quality guitar/car polish.

  • Fingerboard/Bridge (Ebony): Clean with 0000 steel wool, followed by fretboard oil if dry.

Humidity Control

  • Maintain 45–55% relative humidity.
  • Use an in-case humidifier such as D’Addario Two-Way Humidification System® or Oasis OH-6.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to dryness or excessive heat.
  • Use a digital hygrometer to monitor case humidity.

Changing Strings

Taylor’s stringing method ensures tuning stability and reduces breakage:

  1. Loosen and remove old strings.
  2. Clean fretboard with 0000 steel wool.
  3. Insert string ball end into bridge with pin.
  4. Trim string length (see section for tuner post wrap guide).
  5. Wind strings neatly down the post, 2–3 wraps for bass, 6 wraps for treble.
  6. Stretch and tune repeatedly until stable.

Final Notes

The Taylor T5z represents the best of both electric and acoustic guitar design. With proper care, humidity control, and string changes, your T5z will deliver years of outstanding performance whether on stage, in the studio, or at home.
